The NA/DP/USP/Lake/Matser coalition believes moving to the no-longer-so-new Administration Building on Pond Island should be possible June/July (see related story). If that was meant as a New
Year’s resolution it’s in any case a bold one, because the structure some call “the world’s biggest chicken coop” or “white elephant” was first delivered by the contractor already eight years ago.
Several local leaders have claimed since then that there would be a solution soon, but so far to no avail. Moreover, the same scenario with Government’s debts to general pension fund APS and to Social and Health Insurances SZV now mentioned again has been in play from early 2014.
Not only that, but the complex seemingly has deteriorated quite a bit, especially on the inside, partly due to remaining unoccupied for so long. Therefore, the estimated amount needed to complete, furnish and equip the building may turn out higher than previously estimated.
Nevertheless, the approaching New Year gives rise to fresh hope and optimism, while the recently-installed interim William Marlin Cabinet deserves a chance to address this and many other urgent issues facing the country, at least until the September 26 parliamentary elections. Following a lengthy period of political turmoil during the past months, people increasingly could use examples of concrete positive action instead of the usual empty promises and rhetoric.
So, the incoming Government officially gave itself a challenge to actually “walk the walk” this time, rather than just “talk the talk,” by getting this frankly embarrassing matter finalised once and for all. Setting ambitious goals is always admirable, but the real trick is to also meet them.
Happy New Year.
