St. Maarten young netballers enjoy mixed results in Anguilla

CUL DE SAC--The young St. Maarten netball players performed well in Anguilla as the two teams competed in a series of matches over the weekend in Anguilla. The St. Maarten Baby Pelicans (U12) and Junior Pelicans (U14) teams played their counterparts from Friday and Sunday last weekend.


  Netball was introduced to the primary schools just over two years ago. Presently, the coaches conduct training sessions at eight primary schools on the island. The main people behind netball on St. Maarten are Timothy, Javon Edwards who is the President of the St. Maarten Netball Association, Florisca La Rocque, Katherina Gumbs, Jonelle Landefort and Desmond Seymour.
  On Friday night, the Junior Pelicans defeated Anguilla 37 to eight while the Baby Pelicans lost zero to four. On Saturday, the Junior Pelicans won 35 to eight but the Baby Pelicans lost one to five. The Junior Pelicans completed a three-match sweep by beating Anguilla 35 to six while the Baby Pelicans continued their losing streak with a five to 11 loss.
  Coach of the teams, Lisa Timothy said that it was a great experience for the girls and they are now looking forward for the next tournament in Dominica next year. She went on to say thanks to sponsors Motorworld, NAGICO and Princess Juliana International Airport (PJIA).
  The names of the players who travelled are Ambreal Gomez, Osjer Davis, Gelisa Peynado, Shanique Mitchell, Tiasha Blackburn, Imani Peters, Bing Fiona, Sonijka James, Blessing Sancha, Cassy Riviere, Nerlinel Saint Jean, Shanika Jack, Ariel Goberdhan, Leann Ford, Natasha Busby, Makeyah Moore, Ashley lake, Janae Euson, Kiahara Fleming, Syrianna Murray-Viotty, Miriam Carbon, Rianna Roberts, Azareah Bontiff, Ailana Scafe, Tyler Timothy and Zaia Hunte. The other coaches were Gumbs, Landefort and La Rocque.
