St. Maarten will face St. Martin in their Confederation of North, Central American and Caribbean Association Football Nations League Qualifier in Anguilla on Saturday. Kick off is set for 2:45pm.
“I give the edge to the Dutch side,” said Dwayne Wright.
He admits he may be a little biased as he lives on the Dutch side of the island and happens to be the treasure of the St. Maarten Football Federation.
Of more interest is the fact he is in charge of referees and watches games with a critical eye.
“I don’t think it matters which side of the island walks away with the three points both sides will be winners.” He explains our young players will have the opportunity to display their talent to scouts and recruiters. We are bringing the game to the next level.
“This is the first time in recent history the two sides have faced each other in a real competitive match.” He is undecided which formation either side will use.
“Sure, we have played several friendlies like on St. Maarten Day but this is at a new level.”
“I am expecting a really good game.”
Wright believes the Dutch side will prevail.
“We are fortunate in that our local competition is up and running. Our players have a lot of recent game experience.”
As for the national team… Training is going well. The squad is playing a lot of practice games together. “It really is amazing to watch the team improve with each match.”
Wright expects St. Maarten to showcase their talent and speed. He likes the 4-4-2 but thinks with the Dutch side speed even just a single striker will be enough for three points.
“I don’t think it matters which formation the coach uses. I expect the team will be quick on the counter.”
The match will be played in Anguilla. Tickets are still available to ride the ferry over watch the game and return. Cost is $50 which included the boat ride and entrance to the game. Not included are the government taxes. The boat leaves from Marigot at 11:30am and 1:00pm.
