PHILIPSBURG--The Champion of Champions Inter-secondary School U19 tournament got underway at the L.B. Scott Sports Auditorium yesterday with wins for Christ Church Foundation Secondary from Barbados, Gaynstead High School from Jamaica and Central Leewards from St. Vincent and the Grenadines.
In the featured game, St Maarten Combined Secondary Schools was out-hustled by Central Leewards to lose 13 to 26.
The St. Maarten team is the youngest team in the tournament and featured some 13 year old girls who lacked the experience of the older players from the winning team. However, with strong support from the crowd, the local girls put their bodies on the line and contested every play in the battle.
Jeanice Landedort was the best shooter for the home team with nine points out of 22 attempts and Shervanna Diedrick was the best attacker with four points out of 11 attempts.
For the winners, Christopher hit a game high 22 points out of 30 attempts and Gordon scored four points out of nine attempts.
Central Leewards led right through the match. After the first quarter the score was 6-1, in the second quarter 13-7, in the third quarter 21-11 and in the end 26-13 in favour of Central Leewards.
In the opening match, St. Joseph Convent-Egrets from St. Lucia was beaten by Christ Church Foundation Secondary School from Barbados 11 to 39.
Goal Shooter Briana Holder shot the ball well to register 20 points out of 25 attempts for Christ Church Foundation. Goal Attack Chiara Chase scored 17 points out of 23 attempts and Goal Attack Aiyana Reid scored two points out of five attempts. For the Egrets, Gracy Alcide was the best shooter for her team with eight points out of 12 attempts. Goal Attack Melika Destang assisted with three points out of eight attempts.
In the second match of the day, Gaynstead High School from Jamaica defeated Micoud Secondary from St. Lucia 34 to 14. For the winners, Kelsey Jonas hit a game high score of 18 out of 31 attempts. She was well supported by Britney Logan with 16 points of out of 27 attempts. The Micoud Secondary School benefited from 10 points from Goal Shooter Dasha Eugene and two points each from Goal Attack Jermia Sonson and Goal Shooter Simaj Marguerite.
The Champion of Champions tournament continues today from 4:30pm when St. Joseph Convent-Egret takes on Micoud Secondary School, from 6:00pm; Gaynstead High School do battle against Central Leeward Islands and at 8:00pm; the local girls will play Christ Church Foundation.
