CAY HILL – The Island Hoops Foundation, on behalf of the St. Maarten Basketball Federation is proud to announce the island’s first ever 3-on-3 basketball national teams. The U18 Men’s SXM team consists of Kevin Edwards, Louis Fernandes, Kenya Hodge and David Labardy. The players on the U18 Women’s team are Aesha Gibson, Jalaika Davoren, Kenya Hodge and David Labardy.
3-on-3 Basketball, the urban and most commonly played version of the sport has been growing in popularity in recent years. FIBA, the sport’s international governing body has been working tirelessly to create avenues to spread the urban game across the globe and in early 2016 it was decided that the Caribbean region should join the phenomenon.
The National Qualifier event was held indoors at the Blue Mall in October, and both a male and female team earned the right to represent country St. Maarten at the inaugural Lesser Antilles IBF 3x3 Championships in Saint Lucia February 25 and26.
“Having been invited to be part of this craze is truly an honor. Organized 3x3 basketball gives St. Maarten a unique opportunity to participate at official tournaments – something that has never been afforded to us before”, said Coach Paul Bell – St. Maarten 3x3 National Coordinator.
