The St. Maarten Tennis Club has just finished its annual club tournament with the following categories: women singles, men singles, men 40+.
“ On a regular day, the general atmosphere on the courts is always rather friendly, but for the past two weeks, the points really counted,” said Paul van den Hoogen from the club.
The atmosphere surrounding the matches was great; every match brought groups of spectators encouraging their favorite players. Rainy weather gave some small problems, but in the end most matches could be played as scheduled.
In total, 41 matches were played, ranging from beginner’s to medium to more seasoned players.
The women singles group 1, consisting of three courageous players who haven’t played for long, was won by Jessica van Vliet. She won her group matches in two sets. It was great to see these players fight for their chances.
In group 2, Debbie Zwanikken and Michele won both their first match, although the match against each other was won by Michele. Finally, both players had their chances against Tess Blom and Yasmine Essed.
In the Men 40+ singles final, Martijn Eerland got his victory in his second final against Hans de Bruyne. He overcame hard-serving Hans de Bruyne 6-4, 6-1.
Before the prize-giving ceremony followed by snacks and drinks, SMTC president Roeland Zwanikken thanked all players for a nice tournament. He also complimented pro Alexandre Schvartz, for his tremendous input and smooth organization.
