ANGUILLA—The Department of Sports unveiled its first-ever Sports Wall of Fame at the Edison Hughes Public Library on Wednesday, December 6 during its celebration of Sports Week 2017.
The three Anguillans honoured were Whaldama ‘Ras B’ Brooks (deceased) for his role as the media voice, promoter and commentator of Anguillian sport; Colin Bynoe (deceased) for his community advocacy and leadership of numerous sports associations; and Trevor ‘Ras Bucket’ Davis, who represented Anguilla in international track and field events setting records in the 60m, 100m and 200 events, and then later teaching Physical Education in the school system.
They were previously inducted into the Sports Hall of Fame during Sports Week 2016.
Participants, family members and friends were welcomed by the Director of Sports, Andre Collins who thanked the library staff for their support of both the event as well as serving as the institution for the permanent placement of the Wall of Fame. Future inductees will be added to the wall on a biennial basis. Parliamentary Secretary Cardigan Connor, a professional cricketer for 15 years in the United Kingdom before returning home to Anguilla, also praised the legacy of all three inductees, stating that sport is a team effort which affords all participants a voice, irrespective of the size of their community or island. Permanent Secretary Bonnie Richardson-Lake performed the honour of unveiling the plaque. She congratulated the inductees, making the point that sport involves not only the athletes, but also the promoters and the coaches.
Trevor ‘Ras Bucket’ Davis expressed his appreciation for the support of many persons who supported and encouraged him as a youngster to develop as an athlete able to represent Anguilla internationally.
