PHILIPSBURG—Dutch-side schools are looking forward to fierce competition and renewed rivalries when the Vita Malt Inter-Scholastic Run hosted by St. Maarten Road Runners takes place on the Boardwalk on Sunday, March 21.

The race consists of a 2.5K distance for Primary School pupils from ages six to 12 years and 5K for High School students from ages 13-18. The start is on the Walter Plantz Square at 4:00pm on March 21. Registration is free and the winning teams in each category will win US $500 for their school’s gym programme, a pair of shoes for each runner from Hoka, and medals.
The shorter distance starts at 4:00pm and the long distance at 5.00pm. Teams can consist of a minimum three runners or maximum five and must include at least one member of the opposite sex.
Everyone gets a run time when they cross the line but the team position is determined by the first three runners who cross the line. Their times are combined for an overall placement of the team.
Said Secretary of St. Maarten Road Runners, Susy Maidwell-Piscione: “I have always felt that schools should focus more on running as it is an inexpensive sport to become involved in and you do not need any special equipment. Interscholastic runs should be held throughout the year creating school pride and a motivation to be healthy.”
