KFC Cup bowls off with win for Spartans

Cricket Bowl Off: Derryck Jack, General Manager of KFC and Jonelle Richardson, Head of Department of Sport participate in a bowl off to open the KFC Cup T20 tournament at the Caribe Lumber Ballpark on Sunday.

CUL DE  SAC—General Auto Repairs Spartans defeated NAGICO United Cricket Club by 13 runs in the opening match of the KFC Cup at the Caribe Lumber Ballpark yesterday. West Indies white-ball player Keacy Carty led the way for Spartans with a stylish 75 off 35 balls (12 fours, 1 six). Spartans posted a respectable 164 for nine in 20 overs. Other contributors to the total were Daniel Doram with a run-a-ball 20, Akeem Saunders with 15 (2 fours) and Captain Kenroy David with 15 off seven balls (1 four, 1 six).

Carty showed his supremacy as an international player by singlehandedly stroking the ball to all corners of the ballpark. He looked head and shoulder above the rest of the batsmen on display as his technique and mental strength powered him to the top score of the match. For NAGICO, Ashley White from Anguilla with 4-0-25-2, Romain Doodnauth with 4-0-34-2 and Cornelius Dupie with 4-0-40-2 took two wickets apiece. In response, NAGICO, lost two quick wickets in the first two overs to derail the run chase. Deon Burton from Anguilla was dismissed for two by Doram, and Randal Longville was caught and bowled by Rudesh Ramraj for nought.

There was a 45-run partnership between Mrinal Wadhwa and Leeward Islands U17 player Tyanick Honore. However, the latter went for 28 off 24 balls (2 fours, 2 sixes), and White went for nought to further trip up the run chase. With his team losing its way in pursuit of the total, Doodnauth gave them a chance with a blistering 34 off 19 balls (4 sixes). He came to the crease at #6, which some cricket pundits will say is too late, but came out second place in another dual with David. Doodnauth featured in two substantive partnerships in which he dominated both. He contributed 16 in a 35-run partnership between himself and Captain Colin Hamer (7). And then 15 in a 21-run partnership with Dupie (3). When David dismissed Doodnauth, NAGICO needed 55 runs off 22 balls.

Laskshay Caugh and Dupie gave one last throw of the die by scoring 42 off the last 22 balls, but that also came second in the run chase. David was the best bowler for the winners, with three for 41 off four overs.   The opening ceremony was graced with the presence of the Head of the Department of Sport, Jonelle Richardson, Chairman of Cricket St. Maarten, Imran Mc Sood Amjad, KFC General Manager, Deryck Jack and President of Cricket St. Maarten, Bharo Raghubir and his board members. The KFC Cup continues on September 23 when Spartans take on We Lounge Kaieteur from 2:00pm and on September 24 when Masters do battle against Future Champs from 10:00am and Sun Insurance Jaguars match skills with Motorworld Heat from 2:00pm.
