Former pro-ball player helps young athletes

PHILIPSBURG --Former pro-baseball player Andrew Dixon teamed up with Dennis Shipping in Florida to send relief supplies to St. Maarten.

The Minister of Education, Culture, Youth and Sport, Silveria Jacobs thanked the pair
for the supplies, which consisted of non-perishable canned goods, clothing, shoes and water, that were specifically for single parents of the athletes of the various sporting organizations.
Sports organizations were contacted for their assistance in identifying the families in need. Some of the goods were passed out from the L.B. Sports Auditorium and the rest went to the Little League Stadium on Pond Island for distribution.
Dixon, who hails from Jamaica, was drafted by the Giants and played pro-ball from 1986 to 1990.
Recently, he visited St. Maarten and spent time on the ball fields working with local athletes.
Dixon saw a need for help after Irma. He contacted the St. Maarten Sports Department and working with Jonelle Richardson organized the collection and transport of the supplies.
