Eleven athletes to represent St. Maarten at Aruba Open

MIDDLE REGION—Eleven athletes from the King Yen Taekwondo School in Middle Region will represent St. Maarten at the 18th Aruba International Taekwondo Open Championship May 20.


  “Our team will consists of 11 selected athletes, ranging in age 6 to 18 years together with two team officials, one sports therapist and supported by 10 parents,” said Grandmaster Theo Liu. “We have participated more than a decade in this yearly tournament and have won many, many medals and trophies.”
  The local athletes will face stiff competition from Puerto Rico, Venezuela, Columbia, Dominican Republic, United States, Mexico, St. Barths, Surinam, Curacao, Aruba, Costa Rica, Canada, and host Aruba.
  The group will compete in both sparring and form display.
  “This is a once in a life time opportunity and will serve as an unforgettable and tremendous experience for our athletes to acquire international experience in a one of kind event where only the best athletes meet,” explained Liu.
  The competition features the World Tae Kwon Do Federation (WTF) style with electronic scoring and athletes wearing chest, head and feet protection.
