~A Story of Perseverance and Passion~
POND ISLAND--This summer, Henderik Ekema will travel to Scotland — not for sightseeing, but to represent St. Maarten on one of the greatest stages in martial arts: the World Tae Kwon Do Championships.
Known internationally as SH Ekema, he brings with him more than three decades of experience competing at the highest levels. Over the course of his career, he has claimed European and World titles across three disciplines: Tae Kwon Do, Karate, and Kickboxing — a rare achievement that highlights his versatility, mastery, and relentless pursuit of excellence.
For many years, Ekema was a consistent member of the Dutch National Team, representing the Netherlands at major international competitions and traveling the world to fight against the very best. His dedication and performances earned him wide respect throughout the global martial arts community.
Ekema’s passion for martial arts extends beyond competition. At just 15 years old, he already became an instructor, teaching both children and adults, and developing a love for coaching that continues to this day.
In 2016, Ekema proudly represented St. Maarten at the World Tae Kwon Do Championships, capturing two gold medals and one bronze at an event that drew over 3,700 competitors — the largest championship in history at that time.
In 2018, again representing St. Maarten, he secured a third-place finish at the World Championships in England, despite suffering a hand injury during the semifinals.
After years of competing at the highest level, Ekema stepped away from international championships to embrace a different kind of challenge: fatherhood. Today, he proudly raises three children — Sky, Ocean, and Kingston.
Although family responsibilities made it more difficult to maintain the intense training schedule required for global competition, Ekema never left the sport he loves. Instead, he transitioned — from fighter to instructor — demonstrating that each new phase of life brings new ways to inspire and grow.
“Training is all about balance,” Ekema explains. “You cannot just work your muscles; you must fuel your body properly and prioritize recovery. And just as important — maybe even more — is the mental preparation. You can train hard and be in peak physical condition, but if you are not mentally strong, when the time comes to perform on the highest level, nothing will come out.”
This mindset shapes not only Ekema’s preparation but also his philosophy as a coach. He understands that true champions are built equally through physical endurance and mental resilience.
With just two and a half months until the Championships, Ekema’s determination is stronger than ever. His words reflect the heart of a true warrior:
“I can already feel the fire growing inside me — stronger, faster, sharper than ever before.
This is only the beginning. The real work starts now: training six to seven days a week, running while the world sleeps, eating with discipline, pushing through every barrier.
No excuses. No shortcuts. Only forward. Every moment, every drop of sweat, is a promise to myself and my family. Every sacrifice brings me one step closer to the goal.”
Ekema’s journey to Scotland is made possible thanks to the support of several businesses. Among them are Caribbean General Contractors, Incredible Fitness at Cupecoy, and Arena Base Café — just a few of the companies standing behind Henderik as he proudly represents St. Maarten on the world stage.
While Scotland may mark his final appearance as a competitor, Ekema’s mission is far from over. He looks forward to continuing to inspire others through teaching — a role he has embraced with passion since his teenage years.
“I love teaching,” he says. “Working with athletes is incredibly rewarding, but one-on-one training is always very special. It allows me to truly connect with the athlete, understand their goals, and help them achieve their highest potential — both physically and mentally.”
Joining him on this special journey will be his son, Sky, who has already begun martial arts training himself. A legacy is being built — not only through medals and trophies, but through inspiration and mentorship.
“True success demands passion, discipline, and the mental strength to rise when it matters most,” said Ekema.
