Crashes dash the hopes of St. Martin Selection at French Championships

Jahkim Carty suffered an elbow injury after crashing in his race.

MARIGOT--Sunday turned out to be a huge disappointment for the three Velo Club de Sandy Ground (VCSG) riders competing in the U17 and U19 categories of the French Championships in Saint-Brieuc, Brittany, France, when two were involved in crashes, and had their bikes broken.

Jahkim Carty racing in the U19 category fell victim to a crash where several riders went down in front of him. He tried to avoid the crash but still got caught up in it. He injured his elbow and sustained a crack in the front fork of his bike.

Jahiem Kennedy-Hodge riding in the U17 was also involved in a major crash and his bike broke in two. The third rider Rolandio Lake did not finish his race. It was understood personal injuries were not too serious.

Some 157 riders started the U19 race with 71 finishing, and 145 started the U17 race. As has been witnessed time and time again in the Tour de France, a split second lack of attention causing a touch on the back wheel of the bike in front in a tightly bunched peloton can send many riders onto the deck in a domino effect.

Nicole Erato competed in the Women’s Individual Time Trial at the UCI World Cycling Champion-ships in Glasgow, Scotland, and placed 11th out of 20 racers on Monday
