WILLEMSTAD--Curaçao baseball icon Andruw Jones has officially entered the prestigious National Baseball Hall of Fame, securing his place among the greatest figures in the history of the American pastime.
During a ceremony attended by more than 12,000 fans in Cooperstown, New York, Jones received his Hall of Fame plaque in front of a large group of supporters, including many fans who travelled from the island to witness the historic moment.
In an emotional speech, Jones honoured his late father Henry, who introduced him to baseball and guided him during his early years, as well as former Atlanta Braves manager Bobby Cox, who played an important role in his professional career.
Jones is widely regarded as one of the greatest centre fielders in the sport’s history. During his Major League Baseball (MLB) career he won 10 consecutive Gold Glove Awards, recognising him as the best defensive player at his position, and finished his career with 434 home runs.
With his induction, Jones becomes only the 10th centre fielder in MLB history to be elected to the Hall of Fame by the Baseball Writers’ Association of America.
Reflecting on his journey from Curaçao to baseball immortality, Jones highlighted the significance of his achievement. “There is no easy road from a small island like Curaçao to Cooperstown,” Jones said. “But from today on, they are connected forever.”
His induction represents a historic milestone not only for Jones but also for Curaçao, which continues to build a remarkable legacy in international baseball. Jones joins an elite group of players whose careers have left a lasting impact on the sport.
