PHILIPSBURG—“I lost my last fight,” said St. Maarten boxer Malcolm Phillips. “I realized I was not aggressive enough. I also wanted to move my head and duck punches better.”
Phillips trained hard. Worked with his coach Earl Duzong and his training partner Stephan Duzong. He trained multiple days each week and even trained twice on some days.
The hard work paid off. Phillips won his next fight and was named Best Boxer at CuraBox in Curacao Saturday.
On reflection, Phillips trainer believes his boxer might have been just a little to aggressive. Phillips beat Kevin Reales with ten-seconds left in the first round by Technical Knock Out. The fight was scheduled for three rounds.
“I am happy with the result, I just wish the fight had gone a little longer, so Malcolm could have gained a little more experience,” said Earl.
The coach continued, “I am really proud of these guys. They trained hard and made everyone stand up and take notice.”
Stephan was featured in the eighth and final fight of the night. He went up against veteran Curacao boxer Grego Scharbaai and lost on points.
“Our goal was to come home with the best boxer trophy,” said Earl.
The pair of fighters have a busy schedule lined up. In October they want to fight in St. Maarten. In November they want to travel to the ABA competition in the United States and they hope to close off the year fighting in the Caribbean Development Competition in Guyana in December.
Orange Grove Pharmacy sponsored the trip to Curacao.
