FLORIDA, United States--A cruise ship came to the rescue of two Barbadian fishermen after their boat ran out of fuel and went adrift.
Carnival Cruise Line said its passenger ship Carnival Fascination, which is on a seven-day Caribbean cruise that departed San Juan on Sunday, responded to a distress call from the small fishing boat, about 25 nautical miles from Barbados, on Wednesday night around 10 o’clock.
They rescued two fisherman ages 43 and 51 from the vessel, taking them on board and providing medical assistance, a hot meal and accommodation.
“We are extremely proud of the team on Carnival Fascination for rescuing these fishermen in distress,” said Carnival Cruise Line President Christine Duffy. “Performing such a procedure at night is extremely challenging and I applaud the team for their efforts in saving lives at sea.”
The ship continued on its cruise to St. Lucia Thursday, where the two disembarked and returned to Barbados.
This is not the first time a Carnival cruise line has gone into rescue mode. Recently, Carnival Glory rescued a crew member from another cruise line who had been drifting in the water north of Cuba.
And on September 13, the captain of Carnival Elation will be honoured by the Association for Rescue at Sea (AFRAS) in Washington, DC for his team’s role in the rescue of a fisherman whose vessel had sunk in rough seas during Hurricane Irma off the coast of Freeport, Bahamas. ~ Caribbean360 ~
