KINGSTON, Jamaica--The Media Institute of the Caribbean (MIC) announced in a press release that its President, Kiran Maharaj, has been elected to the Steering Committee of the Global Forum for Media Development (GFMD), the world’s largest network of media development and journalism support organisations.
Maharaj will represent Latin America and the Caribbean on the committee, alongside Adriana Garcia of the Brazilian Association of Investigative Journalism. Their election was confirmed on July 16 during an Extraordinary General Assembly of the GFMD, following a vote by member organisations.
The GFMD unites 203 organisations from 82 countries and works to strengthen independent journalism through collaboration, policy advocacy, and support for ethical and sustainable media practices.
Maharaj’s election is seen as a significant milestone for Caribbean media, placing the region at the forefront of international efforts to promote press freedom and innovation in journalism, the release states. Her appointment highlights the Caribbean’s growing voice in global conversations around media policy and the protection of democratic values.
In her new role, Maharaj will help shape the strategic direction of the GFMD, representing the interests and priorities of Caribbean media professionals. The appointment also reflects the region’s ongoing commitment to building resilient, responsible, and inclusive media ecosystems.
