Bomb threat causes delays at LPIA

NASSAU, The Bahamas--A bomb threat forced the evacuation of Lynden Pindling International Airport (LPIA) on Sunday morning.

Police said that shortly after 7:00am, officers at the Airport Police Station were notified by the Nassau Airport Development Company (NAD) that they had received a call threatening that a bomb had been placed on the third floor of Terminal B.

NAD said that it followed its protocols and procedures, and that police and fire services officers managed the evacuation of the terminals to allow for the buildings to be safely screened.

Evacuated passengers and employees waited in the parking lot, while incoming planes were being held on arrival.

NAD said that the all clear was given at 9:13am, allowing for normal operations to resume.

However, it warned that delays were possible as a result of the incident.

“Passengers scheduled to travel [on Sunday were – Ed.] advised to continue to the airport for their scheduled departure times and to follow all instructions from airport personnel upon arrival,” NAD said in a statement.

“Passengers [were told] not arrive earlier than their normal recommended check-in time. Members of the travelling public [were] encouraged to contact their respective airlines directly for the most up-to-date flight information.”

Bahamasair, in a message to ticketed passengers, warned of potential delays.

“Passengers are still expected to arrive for their flights at the regular scheduled check-in time,” it said.

“We sincerely apologise for the inconvenience and appreciate your patience as we work to get you safely to your destination.” ~ The Nassau Guardian ~
