Dear Editor,
People (old and young) have a way of responding to situations which are pointed out to them with “that was then”. So my response would be “So when was it better?” Hoping they would respond with “then”, but that is when the diplomacy begins.
The conversations tend to change, because “you are right” is not a term that our people in government are ready to use. Long ago it was diplomacy. And to cite James 1:19-21: “Everyone must be quick to listen, but slow to speak and slow to become angry.” Nowadays it is “tell it like it is”.
This in turn has flown over in the community. The same situation is manifesting itself with the way women cover themselves nowadays. The beach was the accepted place for women to wear bathing suits (regular or bikini). The time and place for skimpy clothing was during Carnival.
There is legislature governing “being inappropriately dressed”. I was pleased because it is not specifically for women. I know about men being reprimanded for the way they wore their pants in public also. I want to know if this legislature is still in place.
The word prudish comes to mind when I see the drastic change in the way women dress in public nowadays. I am writing to you about this, because the following was thrown in my face by acquaintances, “If that was a man, you would have written about him one time, but it’s the women who are dressing so, so all of a sudden your laptop spoil.”
What I know is that on several occasions when my mother was not pleased with my nieces’ and nephews’ behaviour, I heard my mother telling my brother that she did not rear him so. So, somewhere in the back of my head I am blaming the grandparents.
