POND ISLAND--Fourteen new students will be joining University of St. Martin (USM) for the new semester. The new students, who will be pursuing courses in academic programmes in the general liberal arts, business, hospitality and education divisions, had an orientation session at USM on Monday, August 6.

Orientation Day, traditionally observed by USM weeks before classes begin, is a significant moment when staff, faculty and administrators meet with the new incoming class, introducing students to the ins and outs of campus life. The students were the first to start their academic careers after Hurricane Irma hit St. Maarten in September 2017.

This year’s Orientation Day was organised by USM Counsellor Leona Nestor-Hubert, Admissions Assistant Micaela Hart and USM Marketing Coordinator Valda Hazel. USM President Antonio Carmona Báez and Dean of Academic Affairs Rolinda Carter met with the group of freshmen and exchanged encouraging words of inspiration.

As a small token of welcome with a message of social and environmental consciousness, students received green reusable water cans donated to the university by St. Maarten Nature Foundation. USM aspires to become an eco-friendly campus, joining other St. Maarten institutions in their search to reduce waste, it was stated in a press release on Tuesday.
