US, Kingdom countries to sign justice accord

THE HAGUE--The United States (US), the Netherlands, Aruba, Curaçao and St. Maarten will be reinforcing their cooperation in the area of law enforcement and look at ways to strengthen the rule of law in the Dutch Caribbean countries.

Justice Ministers Loretta Lynch of the US, Ard van der Steur of the Netherlands, Arthur Dowers of Aruba, Nelson Navarro of Curaçao and Edson Kirindongo of St. Maarten will be signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in Amsterdam today, Thursday.

In the MoU, the five parties will define agreements to improve the existing cooperation in the area of law enforcement and to strengthen the rule of law in the Caribbean parts of the Dutch Kingdom. The press has been invited to be present at the signing ceremony, at which time more information will be released about the agreement.

The signing takes place at the end of the Judicial Four Party Consultation of the Justice Ministers of the Netherlands, Aruba, Curaçao and St. Maarten. This meeting takes place twice a year. Talks on a civil servant level to prepare for Thursday’s meeting took place on Wednesday.
