UK provides funding for Anguilla’s border security

ANGUILLA--Recognising the COVID-19 risk posed by illegal boat landings, the UK government is providing EC $2.5 million to assist Anguilla in protecting its borders. The funds will meet the cost of sea and air patrols and for 28 Special Constables that are being employed to improve surveillance at known landing sites.

Anguilla closed its borders to all passenger movement, both in- and outbound, since March 20. However surveillance at sea has found several illegal boats aiming to land in Anguilla, that have been turned back.

Commissioner of Police Paul Morrison said, “The government of Anguilla is committed to protecting its residents from the risk of importing COVID-19 cases into the country through illegal entry. This funding will greatly help the Royal Anguilla Police Force, the Immigration and Customs Departments in our joint efforts to secure the borders.”
