PHILIPSBURG--Police Juvenile Department Detectives are investigating the serious ill-treatment of a fourteen-year-old student in front of the former Sheik Supermarket near St. Maarten Academy on Monday, November 6.
The victim was attacked by four other students attending three other secondary schools, according to witnesses. One of the attackers was in possession of an aluminium baseball bat and used it to strike the victim’s head during the fight.
The boy was treated on the scene by paramedics, transported to St. Maarten Medical Center for treatment and released from hospital after treatment.
Detectives arrested the first suspect in this case, a 16-year-old boy, on Tuesday. He was taken to police headquarters where he was held for questioning. After being questioned he was released.
The second suspect in the case was identified by Detectives by means of video footage of the incident. Detectives arrested this 14-year-old suspect on Thursday and he also was taken to police headquarters where he is held for questioning and further investigation. More arrests in this case will follow.
The Police Juvenile Department sends a strong message to all students and mainly their parents, informing them that this incident is a very serious crime and it will absolutely not be tolerated. Striking the victim with a metal bat in the head could have led to serious injuries or his death.
The police again urge parents to have very serious and extensive talks with their children concerning this type of behaviour and the consequences it has.
