Truck backs into boy, sends him to hospital

page3c227SUCKER GARDEN--A truck driver hit a ten-year-old boy in Sucker Garden Thursday, sending him to the hospital for the night.
The driver was reversing a septic truck in a back lot off Sucker Garden Road. The truck hit the boy, who was walking in the unpaved lot, and knocked him to the ground, The Daily Herald understands. The boy's father Steve Simmons was livid.
"That's my little boy," Simmons said outside the hospital, awaiting news of his son's condition. "He's my only son."
Simmons was told minutes later that his son would be all right. An X-ray revealed no injuries, but the hospital kept the boy for observation. "They say he still moving his feet and there're no broken bones," one of Simmons' sisters told him. He seemed relieved.
The child reportedly was bruised and feeling pain in his lower leg, but sustained with no long-term injury.
The little boy apparently often plays with friends in the lot where the accident took place. The Lions' Civic Centre, or Lions' Den as the St. Maarten Lions Club calls it, is next door. He lives across the street.
Police reportedly questioned the driver, but he was neither on the scene nor at the hospital when this newspaper arrived. No official police report was available on the accident up to press time Thursday.
