PHILIPSBURG--The Ministry of Tourism, Economic Affairs, Transport and Telecommunication (TEATT) and the St. Maarten Tourist Bureau (STB) are implementing a customer-service and COVID-19-awareness training specifically for taxi drivers.

Two companies – Mihet Consultancy and Training Professionals International (TPI) Firm – have been selected to conduct the training.

“The aim of these trainings is to equip our ‘ambassadors’ with the tools to continue serving our diverse clientele as we re-open St. Maarten. … The trainings will also comprise a comprehensive understanding of COVID-19 prevention, protection and safety measures,” said the TEATT Ministry in a press release on Thursday.

The first training began at the Port St. Maarten home-porting terminal on Tuesday, July 21, and will last until Wednesday, July 29.

The second phase of the training is slated to commence on Thursday, July 30, and will end on August 10.

The TEATT Ministry said a third phase is being developed in collaboration with the Justice Ministry and will cater to tour operators and Immigration officers.

The TEATT Ministry encourages taxi drivers who are not members of a taxi association to register for the training by sending their name, taxi number and phone number via e-mail to

“I am grateful to our taxi drivers for their continuous contribution to St. Maarten’s tourism product. The halt in visitors to St. Maarten due to the worldwide COVID-19 pandemic has given us the opportunity to further enhance our product safely via these trainings. I want to thank Port St. Maarten and all stakeholders involved for their collaborative efforts in ensuring that St. Maarten opens in a safe manner,” said TEATT Minister Ludmila de Weever.
