The vehicle crashed by the 17-year-old boy on Thursday evening.
PHILIPSBURG--A seventeen-year-old boy slammed the SUV he was driving into a parked van on Thursday evening after a high-speed chase by police patrols, according to police.
Police spokesman Chief Inspector Ricardo Henson said on Friday that while approaching the Sucker Garden Road/King of the Seas Road junction, a police patrol saw a white SUV in the middle of the street.
“The driver was having a conversation with two other men standing outside of the car. When the driver noticed the police approaching he took off driving in the direction of Philipsburg. The driver started driving recklessly at very high speed from one side of the street to the next.
“The patrol decided to stop the driver to find out why the driver was driving in that fashion. The patrol ordered the driver several times to stop the vehicle, but he refused and continued recklessly. The driver subsequently lost control of the vehicle and collided with a van parked on the side of the Sucker Garden roundabout,” said Henson.
The driver attempted to run away but was caught by the investigating officers. The driver L.R.P. turned out to be a 17-year-old boy. He was not able to produce a driver’s licence and the vehicle did not have any insurance, valid road tax or valid test card.
The police arrested the youth and took him to the Philipsburg police station. His parents were informed about the accident. Both vehicles had severe damage, according to police. Up to press time there was no word whether he was still detained or released to his parents’ custody.
