ST. EUSTATIUS--The second annual Teachers’ Awards Gala and Dinner which had to be postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic will be held at Mike van Putten Youth Center on Saturday, November 28.

The original date for the event was October 3, just before World Teachers Day which is observed by more than 100 countries around the world every year on October 5.
United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) representative for St. Eustatius and coordinator of the event Christina Timber-Glover said the inaugural awards gala of 2019 was very successful.

“It is imperative that we take stock of the challenges and the sacrifices that have been made especially during this unprecedented time. Teachers have gone beyond the call of duty to ensure that continuous learning takes place and learning gaps are mitigated, and this is happening all over the world, but specifically here in Statia,” Timber-Glover said.
The reason for the gala is to take a step back and have a festive moment with the island’s teachers and recognise them for their extra efforts, she said.

Some of the awards that will be given out are: Lifetime in Teaching, Honorary Teacher, Community-Elected Teacher and the brand-new “That’s a Wow” award to a school that has organised a “wow” event. “We also want to pay tribute to some of our teachers who have helped to build a strong educational foundation throughout the years,” Timber-Glover said.

A red-carpet event will precede the opening of the gala, followed by the award ceremony and dinner. The keynote speaker for the evening is expected to be Arlene Henry. The “daughter of the soil” is dynamic speaker with expertise in human resources. She also is a training and development specialist.
