Stripped down scooters implicated in most accidents, says Gendarmerie

MARIGOT--The Gendarmerie has indicated the last eight accidents recorded since July involving two-wheeled vehicles showed that stripped down scooters were directly involved in the accidents.

These refer to scooters that have been modified or stripped down to a skeleton (squelettes) in French, with original parts missing.

The Gendarmerie added these scooters often have no brakes or lights. Injuries were sustained in all of the accidents but fortunately no deaths. As a result, the Gendarmerie has mounted a campaign in the past three weeks to confiscate and destroy these scooters. It noted that 25 of these scooters have already been destroyed.

A press conference is planned for Tuesday to give more details on this campaign and other road security matters.
