Long stretches of the Boardwalk are still shrouded in darkness at night, leaving one of Philipsburg’s iconic features resembling a ghost town. Many restaurants along the beach are still shuttered from last year’s devastating hurricanes; others are only open in the daylight hours. The combination of shut-up buildings and non-functioning streetlights are adding to the perception that the country is not truly open for business. Aside from that, people who exercise, stroll or like to enjoy quiet time on the beach are shying away from the boardwalk due safety concerns that come with dark places.
