ST. EUSTATIUS--Statia Day’s week of activities was officially opened by Commissioner of Culture Derrick Simmons during Sunday’s Gospel Night.
In his speech, Commissioner Simmons said that just a few days before there was no Statia Day Stage as it was damaged by Hurricanes Irma and Maria. “But look here, tonight we do have one,” he said, in wishing everyone a happy and safe Statia Day week of activities.
Master of Ceremonies for Gospel Night Carla Duinkerk extended a warm welcome to everyone present.
After the convocation the audience was inspired by the persons taking centre stage, Ishn Courtar was the “bomb” as he sang his winning song of the Interscholastic Idol Competition, which earned him cheers and a standing ovation from the audience.
The Methodist Choirs also performed, especially the juniors stood out as they sent out greetings to all men and women whose properties were damaged during the hurricanes.
Four tiny toddlers displayed their talents singing “We are marching in the Army of the Lord.”
The performance of Daughters of the King was quite spectacular and flawless and Walton “Lord Gene” Schmidt introduced a new song of his to the audience.
The Jeems Church also performed during the night, along with little Carmen Suares. Steel pan tunes and other local instruments were also all on display along with various talents on stage before “Lady of Culture” Marcella Gibbs-Marsdin gave the vote of thanks.
The week of activities continued Monday with a sports and fitness night during which the Golden Rock Cancer Awareness Foundation put Zumba at centre stage. Tuesday featured Statia’s culture during Culture Night.
