Statia Day week of activities set to kick off this weekend

The official Statia Day celebrations will take place this year at St. Eustatius Historical Museum.

ST. EUSTATIUS--The week of activities leading up to Statia Day, Thursday, November 16, will be kicking off this weekend. The theme of Statia Day 2017 is: “Our Island, Our Culture, Our Celebration.”

The Statia Day activities will start Sunday, November 12, with a Gospel Night filled with praises and blessings.

Monday, November 13, will feature a sports and fitness event, during which participants are invited to come out, have some fun, and get fit in the process. On Tuesday, November 14, Statians will be celebrating their culture during Culture Night.
On the eve of Statia Day, on Wednesday, November 15, the youths on the island will showcase their talents at Youth Night.

Statia Day 2017 will kick off next week Thursday at 6:00am at St. Eustatius Historical Museum, where a programme will commence with the hoisting of the flags by uniformed groups. The official programme will further consist of speeches by dignitaries, performances and other activities.

The area around the Museum will be cordoned off. No traffic will be permitted in the area for safety reasons.

The Statia Day celebration was moved to the Museum from Fort Oranje, due to safety concerns related to erosion of the cliffs on which the fort was built.

During the evening, a Band-O-Rama will take place, during which Rebels Band HD, Jamm Boyzz, Turbulanzz, and Alive Band will take to the Statia Day Stage.

The evening activities are set to start at 7:30, when a disc jockey will entertain the audience from the stage located in Fort Oranje Straat until the activities kick off.

The Statia Day stage was damaged by hurricanes Irma and Maria. The repairs to the stage were carried out by the Department of Public Works.
