MARIGOT--The Prosecutor’s Office has disclosed that 28 scooters and moto cross bikes have been impounded during a major control by Gendarmes.
The control initiated by the Prosecutor, and in collaboration with the Collectivité’s delinquency prevention department and Territorial Police, is part of a clamp-down started at the beginning of the year on dangerous behaviour on the roads, exhibited by owners of scooters and motorbikes
The inspections included checking for valid insurance, two-wheeled vehicles not authorized to be used on public roads (moto cross), or in a bad state of repair (stolen, trafficked, or of unknown origin), owners who were not in possession of a Brevet de Securité Routiére (mandatory for two-wheeled vehicles), and driving without wearing a crash helmet.
Of the 28 two-wheeled vehicles confiscated, 12 were returned to their owners after producing valid documentation. Four were taken to the landfill in Grand Cayes to be destroyed by Company Verde SXM after pollutants were removed. Commandant Sébastien Manzoni explained there are several reasons a scooter may be condemned to be destroyed, but usually because they are too old or in very bad condition.
In addition, 11 other cases are under investigation. There were 7 summonses to court to answer charges, and 10 alternative summonses where the owners were given a second chance to take the BSR test at a driving school or be fined.
