SMMC roof repaired to pre-Irma condition

~ Reinforcement soon ~

CAY HILL--St. Maarten Medical Center (SMMC) has recently completed the necessary repairs to bring its roof back to the original state as it was prior to Hurricane Irma, which wrought havoc on the island on September 6, 2017.

With the roof repair now completed, the hospital is expected to start a roof reinforcement project soon.
SMMC began roof repairs and upgrades to its infrastructure earlier this year after the damage caused by Hurricane Irma. The roof reinforcement project was a necessary step to further safeguard patients and staff during major storms, as SMMC transitions towards the construction of a new general hospital, SMMC said in a press release on Tuesday.
Following Hurricane Irma, upgrades have been made to the design of the new hospital for the facility to be able to withstand storms in the most severe category.
“SMMC would like to thank all persons involved to complete the renovation works in a timely manner,” SMMC Facilities Manager Erika van der Host said. “We are also looking forward to the roof reinforcement project, slated to commence shortly, which will add strength to the entire roof section in the interim while we embark on the building of the new hospital.”
