PHILIPSBURG--St. Maarten Carnival Development Foundation (SCDF), in collaboration with its main sponsor TelCell, is preparing to host the highly-anticipated Causeway Jump-Up, the first official pre-Carnival event for the Carnival 2019 season. The event will be held on Saturday, March 16, starting at 8:00pm.
SCDF President Alston Lourens said the excitement and anticipation for the jump-up is very high, after months of preparing for the 50th anniversary of St. Maarten Carnival. “Carnival lovers are just anxious to get on the road or behind a big truck and do their thing,” he said.
The jump-up is scheduled to feature five bands and two DJs, giving SCDF an impressive seven big rigs and support vehicles on the road for its first event. The bands listed to be on the road are TG Band, 4M Band, ZTB, The Big Bad XP and Skilful Band. DJ Pauly will be back with the KFC truck, and DJ SoSo will be on the other DJ truck on the road.
The jump-up will begin along the stretch from the entrance of Pelican to the Simpson Bay bridge and make its way down the Simpson Bay stretch, Airport Boulevard, over the causeway, through Cole Bay via Union Road and Welfare Road until it comes to an end in front of Soggy Dollar Bar.
At Soggy Dollar, TelCell and SCDF will host an after party where persons in attendance can win a Carnival season pass and other gifts from TelCell. Entrance to the after party is US $5.
“The Causeway Jump-Up has turned into the official pre-Carnival event to start us up every year. Once we kick off, it’s one Carnival event after the other every weekend until Carnival opens on April 20. So, in essence, Carnival 50 begins on Saturday. We have been working hard since the close of Carnival 2018 to make Carnival 2019 a special one. St. Maarten, its residents and its hundreds of visitors will have an epic Carnival season from March 16 until May 7,” Lourens said on Monday.
