MARIGOT--An accident between a scooter rider and a car on Sunday night in French Quarter has left a young man without a left foot after it had to be amputated.
The accident occurred around 10:00pm on the RN7 near the pharmacy. Capitaine Emmanuel Maignan said the car driver left the scene of the accident very quickly, apparently fearing for his life when a large crowd gathered around the injured and unnamed 24-year-old scooter rider.
But the car driver reported to the French Quarter station on Monday to explain his actions. It was not known at this point if he will be charged with leaving the scene of an accident.
"The scooter was travelling in the direction of Orient Bay and according to the car driver he was overtaking another car and consequently on the wrong side of the road and having misjudged the manoeuvre could not avoid colliding with his car," Maignan said. "That is the car driver's version of what happened, but we don't know yet what the scooter rider's version is."
The car driver was not breathalysed for alcohol as he had already left the scene of the accident. A routine blood sample was also taken from the scooter victim but the result is not yet known.
Maignan confirmed the scooter rider was transported to the French-side hospital where his left foot was amputated. He did not have information on whether he had been wearing a crash helmet. It was not clear how his foot came to be crushed. Some toes were also reportedly dismembered in the accident.
