For this week’s Hot Seat, Out N About sat down with Perla Bruney – a well-known woman here in St. Maarten-St. Martin who is Head of the Carnival troupe LOVE4FUN. She tells us all about her career, experiences, philosophies and what she loves about the island of St. Maarten-St. Martin.
1: Please introduce yourself. How would you describe what you do?
I was born in St. Maarten. At a very young age, I would participate in Carnival and would think to myself: “I can aspire to have a troupe.” Then in 2015 was the first year I had a troupe – LOVE4FUN!
2: How early would you start preparing?
Well normally, I would start preparations in advance by selling raffle tickets for a cash prize of US $500. Then with those proceeds, I would pay for the sample, which is called the prototype which the participants in turn would pay for to participate.
3: What languages do you speak or comprehend?
I speak English, Dutch, Spanish and Papiamento, which make may troupe stand out as being very diverse.
4: Do you work elsewhere on the island in a different field other than Carnival?
Yes, I am involved with community efforts including Peridot Foundation, against domestic violence.
5: What is your favourite place for a meal in Sint Maarten, and where would you recommend to someone who’s visiting the island?
I will always suggest the Holland House Hotel for accommodations, and the Ocean Lounge has amazing food and drinks. If I was to recommend a place on the French side, I would suggest Ocean 82 in Grand Case.
6: Tell us a bit more about your experience in this creative profession?
I love Carnival season, but I love the parade in particular.
7: What makes St. Maarten magical to you?
I just love St. Maarten as a mother loves a child. I love MY FRIENDLY ISLAND!
8: Any closing thoughts?
I love creativity – seeing something from nothing turn into something magical and beautiful, or witnessing something that I have not given thought to. I like “wow factors” and order. And what gives me satisfaction is when I can satisfy my revellers and see them enjoying themselves, looking good and having a great time.
