‘Say no to election’ petition started

 

PHILIPSBURG--A petition calling on the population to denounce the calling of early elections has been started.

  The petition had garnered almost 2,000 signatures up to early last night. The petitioners said St. Maarten is currently in a desperate state and critical establishments are not functioning effectively.

  “Our infrastructure continues to hurt from the effects of Hurricane Irma. This is a moment in our history where the line is drawn between those who love our country, and those who would prolong her suffering,” the petition reads. “We cannot stand by as we are unwillingly dragged into an undemocratic election. … Wake up. There can be no new parties formed; the Electoral Council is not functional. The screening process cannot be properly initiated, let alone completed. …

  “Set aside your egos. Set aside your history. You do not matter. The people matter. And the people are tired, hungry and angry.  #NoToNewElections,”
