PHILIPSBURG--A ban on Styrofoam will also be sought by United Democrats Member of Parliament (MP) Sarah Wescot-Williams, the legislator who is already seeking to get Parliament to pass a ban on single-use plastic bags.
The draft amendment to the Police Ordinance that will bring the single-use plastic bag ban into effect is with the Council of Advice for review and comment. Wescot-Williams said this week that she is eagerly awaiting the Council’s review and plans to go a step further when the draft is returned to her.
She is using as her yardstick the strides made by Aruba in banning single-use plastic bags and the follow-up step to do the same with Styrofoam.
She said the amendment to add Styrofoam to the “banned” list will not affect the coming into effect of the ban on single-use plastic bags. The law change, once tabled in Parliament, can have timeline for the implementation of each ban.
The ban may seem a small step, but one that can bring big changes, Wescot-Williams said. Aruba has seen significant changes since the enforcement of its single-use plastic bag ban, she said.
