PHILIPSBURG -- In recognition of Rotary’s Water and Sanitation Month, observed in March, Rotary Club of St. Martin Sunset carried out several projects aimed towards advocating the importance of access to clean drinking water. Club members presented water coolers to Excellence Learning Academy and to No Kidding With Our Kids Foundation on March 29 and April 4.
One of Rotary’s key areas of focus involves providing access to clean water. With access to clean water and better sanitation practices, the potential for waterborne diseases decreases and children become healthier. Access to clean water, sanitation, and hygiene education are basic necessities for a healthy environment, thus Rotary Sunset thought it beneficial to provide water coolers to the two afterschool programmes, with contributions from Heavenly Water.
Rotary Sunset members gathered at both establishments to present the water coolers along with a five-gallon container of water each, to ensure that the students attending these programmes have access to clean drinking water daily.
“In recent years, we have seen major countries facing water shortages and severe droughts. We have also seen the deterioration in developing countries such as Venezuela, where people are struggling to provide food and clean water to the families.
“Although we are not faced with the imminent threat of such unfortunate events, it is of paramount importance that we keep advocating the importance of having access to clean water and, more importantly, it is important to stress the importance of water conservation practices,” Rotary Sunset President Jaida Nisbett stated on Sunday.
Rotary Sunset thanked Heavenly Water for its generosity and continued support throughout the club’s many endeavours. The club also thanked the management and staff of Excellence Learning Academy and No Kidding With Our Kids Foundation for their cooperation in the execution of its project.
