Robbery suspect stopped by Checkmate Security guard

PHILIPSBURG--An unknown man wearing a motorcycle helmet and armed with a gun stormed into Sports Center shoe store on Back Street at 12:50pm Friday demanding cash from the staff.

A Checkmate Security guard went beyond the call of duty and fought with the robber. According to police, the robber struck the guard on the back of his head with the weapon. In the struggle, the guard grabbed the firearm from the suspect and pointed it at him.page3a291

When the suspect saw that the guard had overpowered him, he fled the scene and jumped on a motor scooter along with another suspect who was waiting for him. The staff quickly contacted police and gave them descriptions of the scooter and suspects.

Police patrols spotted the suspects in Cole Bay and chased them near the Cole Bay roundabout. The suspects managed to evade capture, causing police to search the entire area. The incident created long traffic lines as far as Simpson Bay, Bellevue and Cole Bay Hill.

Police called off the search and confiscated the scooter, as they could not locate the suspects. Several items involved in this case were confiscated by the Special Robbery Unit for further investigation.page3c291
