Gaming Control Board, UTS react to Dutch MP

WILLEMSTAD--Curaçao's Gaming Control Board (GCB) says it is successful in exercising the task of monitoring the local casino industry. "GCB is a highly professional organisation with extensive specific knowledge and experience with regard to the complex monitoring of the gambling industry." a press release stated.

Also United Telecommunication Services (UTS) and its subsidiaries say they adhere to laws and regulations that apply to them in the jurisdictions in which they operate, according to the government-owned company.

"UTS incorporated the Curaçao Code of Corporate Governance in its statutes and into its operations," said a representative of management.

According to UTS, they are also the only telecommunications provider on the island that ensures a dedicated concession to the entire island and complies with these obligations.

Both entities were responding to statements by Member of the Second Chamber of Dutch Parliament Ronald van Raak of the opposition Socialist Party (SP). The latter again asked questions to Minister Ronald Plasterk of Kingdom Relations on reports in various media about the Curaçao gaming sector.

Van Raak believes that Curaçao's supervision on the gambling sector is failing. He also wants clarification on UTS, which would be facilitating online casinos and SMS lotteries.

"The acquisition of Ctex [Curaçao technology exchange-Ed.] could be intended to expand these activities," said the parliamentarian. Van Raak also wanted to know who checks UTS’ financial reports.
