WILLEMSTAD--Intended future Prime Minister of Curaçao Eugene Rhuggenaath was named “formateur” by Governor Lucille George-Wout after signing a governing accord with two other party leaders. This means the island will soon have a new government based on the result of the recent parliamentary election. Rhuggenaath hopes to present his new Cabinet within a couple of days, following the usual screening of candidate ministers.
The incoming coalition consists of Rhuggenaath’s PAR as big winner of the election with six seats in Parliament, the MAN party led by Hensley Koeiman with five and newcomer PIN of Suzanne Camelia-Römer with one, which is good for a majority of 12 in the 21-seat legislature.
The government formed following the previous election only last October consisted of MAN, PAR and PNP, from which PIN originated. That Koeiman Cabinet fell after just two weeks in office when parliamentarians switched allegiance to create a “new majority” headed by MFK-leader Gerrit Schotte.
However, the outgoing Council of Ministers dissolved Parliament and called snap elections on April 28 before stepping down. The new majority then installed an interim government that tried to stop an early return to the polls but was overruled by the governor and the Netherlands.
The current governing accord to a large extent corresponds with that of the then MAN/PAR/PNP coalition.
