Restoring history

Repair work on the historical Methodist Church on Front Street are underway. The wood-shingle-and-concrete building was damaged when Hurricane Irma slammed into the island on September 6, 2017. The cornerstone for the iconic building was laid on March 20, 1851, on the “old English church plot” granted by King William III of the Netherlands to the “Wesleyans” as the Methodists were then called. The original church, completed in October 1851, was replaced by the present damaged one. The foundation was left touched and the “new” building maintained the original shape and design of the old one. The building is one of the country’s monuments. (Rajesh Chintaman photo)
