SIMPSON BAY--The rebuilding of Princess Juliana International Airport terminal is “on schedule” with the mould remediation and removal of surface contamination underway, disclosed the airport managing board on Wednesday.
The rebuild and mould removal are due to extensive damage caused by Hurricanes Irma and Maria a year ago.
The work, being executed by Texas-based company BMS CAT International, will include the installation of high efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filtration units and portable humidifiers to dry any remaining wet building materials. The project covers the ground floor of the terminal.
The airport plans a “seamless transfer” of its departure and arrival operations to the terminal’s fully air-conditioned and Wi-Fi-enabled ground floor in November.
The decontamination project has resulted in the employment of some 50 local workers. The completion of this part of the rebuilding process is “much anticipated,” as the peak season for the airport is December 15 to April 15.
The June 2018 average daily passenger volume was 106 per cent compared to the previous month. This change reflects the number of rooms reopening. Four cargo airlines and 22 commercial lines are now servicing the country.
