Queen Máxima returns home for hospitalisation

THE HAGUE--Queen Máxima cancelled her visit to the People’s Republic China on Tuesday and returned to the Netherlands where she will be hospitalised. She has pyelonephritis, a serious infection of the renal or kidney pelvis.

The Dutch Government Information Service RVD announced the Queen’s early return on Tuesday. On Monday, during her stay in China, the doctors diagnosed her with pyelonephritis, a bacterial infection to the side of the pelvis of one or both kidneys.

With antibiotics, lots of rest and drinking plenty of water, the symptoms should go down in a few days. However the symptoms of fever and pain in her back didn’t diminish, so it was decided in consultation with the doctors that she would return to the Netherlands. The Queen will be hospitalised at the Bronovo Hospital in The Hague for further examination.

King Willem-Alexander will remain in China to continue the official visit. He attended a gathering with a part of the Dutch community in Shanghai on Tuesday. The King thanked the people for the well-wishes for the Queen. “I will relay them to my wife,” he stated on Twitter.

Máxima was unable to attend the majority of the programme in China and stayed in the hotel. She only attended the state banquet of China President  Xi Jinping in Beijing on Monday evening.

The Bronovo Hospital is well-known territory for the Royal family. The three daughters of Willem-Alexander and Máxima were born there. The hospital is close to the current home of the King and Queen, De Eikenhorst in Wassenaar.
