SYNOPSIS:

A moist wind flow and an unstable atmosphere will cause some isolated showers and isolated thunderstorms across the region today. By Tuesday, an active tropical wave will begin affecting the local area further increasing the likelihood of showers and thunderstorms. Some of these showers may be heavy, and cause flooding in low-lying areas due to already saturated soils. Residents and motorists using these areas are advised to be vigilant and/or avoid these areas whenever possible.

Moderate seas are expected during this forecast period. However, further deterioration is expected with waves peaking up to 9 feet on Wednesday night. A small craft advisory will be issued tomorrow (Tuesday). Small craft operators and sea bathers should exercise caution.

STATE OF THE SEA: Moderate                WAVES/SWELLS: 5 to 7 feet

SPECIAL FEATURE: As of 6:36 am, a vigorous tropical wave (AL96) located about 200 miles east of the Leeward Islands is producing a large area of disturbed weather over much of the western tropical Atlantic Ocean. Shower and thunderstorm activity has increased and become a little more concentrated this morning, and environmental conditions are forecast to gradually become more conducive for the development of a tropical depression or a tropical storm during the next day or so. The eventual formation of a tropical cyclone is forecast to occur after it has already passed St Maarten. The disturbance is forecast to move westward to west northwestward for the next few days, passing near or north of the Leeward Islands, Puerto Rico, Hispaniola, and the southeastern Bahamas. Interests in these areas should closely monitor the progress of this system.

Regardless of development, this system will likely bring heavy showers and scattered thunderstorm activity to the region from Tuesday.

The Meteorological Department will continue to monitor the progress of this system.

OUTLOOK through Wednesday midday: Cloudy, breezy with scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms.
