SYNOPSIS:
The atmosphere across the local area is gradually drying out and stabilizing as a tropical wave moves further from the region. Hence, precipitation will be restricted during this forecast period. Meanwhile, the Atlantic high pressure ridge will maintain light to gentle winds.
Marine conditions are expected to gradually deteriorate as Hurricane Irma approaches the Lesser Antilles. Small craft operators and sea bathers should exercise caution and keep updated.

At 11:00 AM LST, the center of Hurricane Irma was located near latitude 17.7 North, longitude 48.4 West or about 966 miles east of St. Maarten. Irma is moving toward west southwest near 14 mph (22 km/h), and this course at a slightly slower forward speed is expected through tonight and then a turn toward the west on Monday.
Maximum sustained winds are near 115 mph (185 km/h) with higher gusts. Some strengthening is forecast during the next 48 hours.
The Meteorological Department of St. Maarten (MDS) will continue to monitor the progress of Irma. Members of the public are advised to monitor the updates on this system and make all necessary preparations for its passage.
