Possible Parliament meeting with airport and NAGICO

PHILIPSBURG--A possible Parliament meeting with Princess Juliana International Airport (PJIA) and its insurer NAGICO is in the offing.

However, in light of the recent court verdict ordering the insurer to pay PJIA’s claim, the need for the meeting will have to be evaluated, said Parliament Chairwoman Sarah Wescot-Williams.

Also to be evaluated is how Parliament can summon a private entity such as NAGICO to appear before the legislature. Unlike NAGICO, PJIA is a government-owned company with government as shareholder’s representative and ultimately the people of St. Maarten as the shareholders.

The meeting with PJIA and its insurer was requested by several Members of Parliament prior to the court’s verdict some three weeks ago.

Wescot-Williams said in Parliament’s press briefing this week that she would speak to the meeting requesters to determine whether to continue with the session.

Asked how she intends to summon NAGICO, she reiterated that this would have to be looked into, but she believes an invitation was already sent to the private company by the Secretariat of Parliament.
