Police to be on guard at Lycée on daily basis

MARIGOT--The Territorial Police will be on duty from midday onwards on a daily basis from now on to protect teachers, staff and students at the Lycée following the violence that erupted at the establishment earlier in the week.

A group of adults armed with machetes arrived outside the Lycée on scooters on Wednesday around midday and targeted a 15-year-old victim who received cuts to his leg.

The attack, regarded as “very serious” by the Gendarmerie, resulted in the closure of the Lycée on Wednesday afternoon and Thursday morning. Gendarmes were present when classes resumed at 2:00pm Thursday, but few students. Teachers exercised their right not to work.

Reports indicated that fights between students had begun inside the establishment on Wednesday morning.

Capitaine Emmanuel Maignan said there had been no arrests.

A general assembly of teachers was due to meet Friday morning to decide what course of action to take. Teacher’s union spokesperson Dominque Louisy said; “Security is not assured for the teachers. They were shocked at the incident. There were machetes and even guns were seen. Some students told us that the attackers were coming back when classes restart to settle scores.”

In an unrelated matter, the Gendarmerie said the individual who had held a tourist couple at gunpoint on Fort Louis and had stolen a smart phone had been arrested.
