PHILIPSBURG--The St. Maarten Police Force is currently reporting a drastic spike in the number of vehicular thefts on the island. With more than 70 vehicles reported stolen since the beginning of 2017, it is a definite cause for concern, according to acting police spokesman Inspector Rehensly Henson on Friday.
“With vehicles ranging from scooters to cross bikes to cars and pickup trucks, it is obvious that almost any vehicle type can be stolen. For the month of June there were a total of 32 vehicles stolen,” stated Henson.
The Police Force is urging the public to be extra vigilant with regard to their own vehicles.
“Be sure to keep all documentation up to date and verify that all recorded information matches that of your vehicles, as this information can help greatly with the investigation/recovery.
“What has become evident is that these stolen vehicles are being used for robberies and other criminal acts on a more frequent basis. If any unusual activity is noticed in your neighbourhood, please call 911 and report this to the authorities immediately,” concluded Henson.
